Gear Reviews
When I launched my YouTube channel, I made a conscious choice to avoid becoming another platform for quick-turnaround gear reviews. Now more than ever, many creators receive free equipment, unbox it, and promptly share their thoughts and call it a review without having thoroughly tested the product. While this approach may suffice for some items, given that a lot of outdoor equipment plays a critical role in ensuring our safety while in the backcountry, I believe many of these products deserve a more careful and extensive evaluation across a variety of scenarios before offering an informed review. For instance, when reviewing a four-season tent, I believe it's essential to actually test it throughout all four seasons in a range of conditions and environments to provide an accurate assessment. This is the approach I will be taking in my gear reviews on this site. You will not find reviews of tents or products that I have only used once; instead, my reviews are based on extensive testing over time, often spanning several years. Additionally, I plan for these reviews to be continuously updated, ensuring they reflect the most current insights and experiences.
ZenBivy Light Bed: A Dream Sleep System for Side and Stomach Sleepers
The Zenbivy Light Bed is a premium backpacking sleep system designed to deliver the comfort of a traditional bed while maintaining the weight savings and packability of a lighter weight quilt. Unlike conventional mummy bags, the Light Bed utilizes a unique quilt, fitted sheet, and hood system that integrates with your sleeping pad. This design minimizes drafts while allowing for unrestricted movement and natural sleeping positions, creating a sleep experience that feels far more like your bed at home than a restrictive sleeping bag. But is the Zenbivy Light Bed the right sleep system for you?
In this review, I'll take an in-depth look at the complete Zenbivy Light Bed system, including its design, comfort, warmth, weight, and durability. I'll cover both the -12°C (10°F) and -4°C (25°F) Light Quilts with their corresponding hoods, as well as the Zenbivy Flex Air Mattress and the original Zenbivy SoftTop Pillow, to determine how the system performs in real-world backpacking conditions.
Hilleberg Unna: A Minimalist Solo Expedition Tent
The Hilleberg Unna is a spaciousfour-season, freestanding solo tent designed for adventurers who prioritize simplicity, durability, and all-weather reliability. Unlike many solo tents, it offers a spacious interior with ample space to sleep and store your gear, without the need for a dedicated vestibule. The simple two-pole design allows for the tent to be fully pitched without the need for guy lines or stakes (although this is still advised), making it a versatile option for setup in nearly any environment, whether alpine, rocky beach, dense forest, or in snowy conditions. But is it worth the investment? Let’s break it down..
